2001Fall One of the best fall migrations ever for this species, with multiple reports from Big Stone N.W.R., various sewage lagoons in western Minnesota, and sod farms in Dakota County. Statewide total 550+ individuals in 12 counties (293+ in 16 counties last fall), including 8/10 Watonwan JJS. Record high counts 8/6 Dakota (164 at Empire sod farm) CRM, 8/8 Lac qui Parle (162 at Big Stone N.W.R.) BEO, DB. Early north 8/9 Otter Tail (6) DTT, SMT. Early south 8/2 Dakota, but see summer report. Late north 9/20 St. Louis PHS. Last reported 9/28 Lac qui Parle BEO.

2002Fall Excellent migration for the second consecutive fall, especially at sod farms in Dakota County. Statewide total about 547 individuals in 19 counties (550+ in 12 counties last fall), including 8/7 Martin (near Truman) JEB, 8/11 Brown (Sleepy Eye lagoons) DDM, BJM. Early north 8/4 Roseau (68 near Sprague Creek) PHS, 8/9–10 Roseau (2 at Roseau lakebed) JMJ. Please see summer report for early south migrants. 2003Fall Fewest reports since 1999. Numbers down dramatically at Dakota County sod farms compared to recent fall migrations. Statewide total about 194 individuals in ten counties (547 last fall, 550+ in Fall 2001). All north reports: 8/2 St. Louis fide DRB, 8/24–9/6 Marshall (max. 4 at Agassiz N.W.R.) PHS, JMJ, 9/6 Wilkin (22 at Breckenridge W.T.P.) EJE, 9/20 St. Louis JJS. None were in Lake for the first time in five years. Early south 8/12 Big Stone KJB and Brown BTS. Highest reported count 8/16 Big Stone/Lac qui Parle (55) PCC. Near daily surveys at Sleepy Eye airport, Brown County, documented peak migration there during the first half of September including 9/2 (14), 9/4 (15), 9/7 (24), 9/10–12 (16–18) BTS. No south reports after 9/15 Brown (1) BTS.

Statewide total of 301 individuals from 20 counties was relatively low for the fifth consecutive year, when compared with totals of approx. 550 for 2001 and 2002.
