| 1999 | Spring | First state record 3/17 Jackson (Anderson Marsh) KB. | ||
| 2002 | Fall | An adult female associating with Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Common Mergansers was shot by a hunter 11/6 St. Louis (Island L., north of Duluth). Examination in the hand (KRE, JWL) revealed evidence of prior captivity (The Loon 75:44–45). | ||
| 2004 | Spring | Adult male with clipped right hallux (indicating previous captivity) seen 3/11–12 Olmsted (L. Shady in Oronoco) CAK, ph. RLE, m.obs., then 3/14–17 at Silver Lake in Rochester. This is the second documented occurrence of an escaped or released Smew in Minnesota. | ||
