1934Summer A nest of this species containing 15 eggs and 2 eggs of the Rin~necked Pheasant~ was discovered b~ar Iaville, South Sakata, by Mrs. C. E. Peterson on June 5th. The Flicker, 1934 -f.36
1940SummerC. Edward Carlson was the only observer who reported chis species. His dates for 8 nests ranged from May 20 to June 26. The nests were all found in Martin County and usually contained from I2-20 eggs. Only a few eggs were successfully hatched.

1977Fall Many reports, this bird is at one of its highest peaks ever.
1977Winter Continues to do well with reports from 25 counties including a peak of 1/9 on the Warren CBC; also a survey in Wilkin Co. by S. Musielewicz turned up no less than 866 individuals in 1/1 covies!

1990Winter Population boom in the south! Reported from 36 counties (28 l.y.) with a statewide CBC total of 6/9, over five times l.y. total of 1/2 (see introduction for comments on this phenomenon). RJ found 48 in one field in Cottonwood, observers in Fillmore reported flocks up to 30, and DS found 50 in Houston 2/21 and 22. Recorded northeast to Sherburne with normal or even below normal numbers in west central and northwest counties.

1993Summer Sharp decline in number of reports continues for second straight year; many observers noted seeing fewer birds. Probable nesting in Cottonwood. Seen in ten other western counties as far north as Clay; plus Martin, Wabasha, Winona, Houston.

1993Winter Very scarce. Reported from 18 counties (23 l.y.) in the south and west as far north as Polk.

1994Winter Probably lowest number of reports ever. Since a population boom in 1991 (The Loon 63:175), this species has steadily declined. Reported from only six counties with a statewide CBC total of only 15 (619 in 1991 and 1,105 in 1985). Although fluctuation in numbers is normal for this species, it seems possible this species could be completely wiped out by a harsh winter.

1995Summer Very few reports, similar to last year. Nested in Lyon; observed in six other western counties plus Watonwan, Carver, Dakota, Rice, Goodhue.

2000Spring Reported from total of 22 south counties but none in east-central region and only Houston in southeast. Only north reports: Polk, Wilkin.

2002Fall Only north reports: 10/13 Clay (7) PHS, 10/27 Otter Tail (22) SPM. Seen in 10 south counties, including 9/3 Winona (5 near Stockton) DBz.
