1945WinterPresent every winter in northern Minnesota; quite a few records from the southern sections of the state.
1961SpringMrs. Paul G. Kief reports several in Montevideo, Chippewa Co., from February 17 until April 2. Mrs. Lee E. Payne of Willmar, Kandiyohi Co., reports that a flock spent all of March at her feeder. Mrs. Allan had them at her feeder in Ramsey Co., until May 12. Ray Naddy saw them at Duluth as late as May 31.
1961FallMany reports. First report was 10 Sep., mixed flock of adults and juveniles, at Virginia, St. Louis County, by Vera Barrows. On 14 Sep., Mrs Micensky reported them in Hibbing, St. Louis County. P. B. Hofslund saw them in Duluth on 11 Sep. In the southern part of the state, many were seen at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis on 22 Oct. by W. R. Pieper. Dean Honetschlager reports them in Washington County on 26 Oct. Miss Mathilda Henkel reported two at Whitewater State Park on 5 Oct. and six at Wacouta, Good- hue County on 5 Nov. On 17 Nov., Mrs. Allan saw a small flock at Lake Josephine, Ramsey County. On 12 Nov., Lowry Elliott saw a single bird near the Minnesota-South Dakota border, five miles west of Rosen, Lac
1961WinterOn January 26, a flock of about 75 was seen by Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Southern on Lake Bemidji, Beltrami County. Mrs. B. L. Duckstad of Fertile, reported them on January 15. Mrs. J. M. Dahm, on January 27, reported that flocks of from 6 to 25 have been seen since mid-December at Winona. A. C. Rosenwinkel and many others saw them over most of the winter throughout Ramsey County and the Twin Cities area. Jan Green reports them as present all winter at Duluth with flocks of 30 to 60. F. Miller saw from 6-20 at Eveleth, St. Louis County, during all of December and January. Dean Honetschlager saw them regularly in Washington County between December 15 and February 28.

1962Winterall winter, Shotley, Beltrami Co., feeder of Mrs. Ben Goranson. One of these, a female, had aluminum band and 3 color-bands as follows: left leg-green above red, right leg-green above aluminum. Banded by any of our Minnesota banders? Widely reported in northern part of state from Waskish east to Hibbing and North Shore, south to May Twnshp, Washington Co. (D. Honetschlager), Minneapolis (W. J. Breckenridge), thence northwest to Cass Lake (Avifaunal Club) and Fertile, Polk Co. (Mrs. B. L. Duckstad).
1963SummerCass Co., Cass Lake, Aug. 19, female feeding y in yard, Mrs. John Mathisen. Beltrami Co,. Shotley, 1 ad at feeder June 30 and again Aug. 13, Mabel Goranson. St Louis Co., Duluth, A. K. Arndt reports, "On the 9th and lOth (July) a y male and a y female were being fed by adults -thru the 15th we saw one both each dav. It was fun discovering you could definitely identify the sexfemale is like the adult female but male has adult male wing markings but an all-over yellow head -the blackish head with yellow brow-line not there. 1 v male being fed on 17th, female on 20th. On July 26, she saw 2 y being fed. She also gives this account of y being fed during Aug: Aug. 1, 2 y, Aug. 2 1 y male, Aug. 5, 4 y, Aug. 6, 3y, Aug. 8, 1 v, Aug. 10, 1 y
1963WinterExcept for one or two large flocks, occurred mostly as small groups and scattered individuals in Cass, St. Louis, Stearns, Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Washington, Winona, Olmsted, Kandiyohi, Beltrami, Lake-ofthe- Woods Counties. See Christmas counts.

1964Summeralthough this· species has been recorded for the past few summers feeding young in northern Minnesota, not until this year were the nests actually found. 6-26, near Brainerd, Crow Wing Co, nest found by Robert and Rita Dzilna, photographed by W. Breckenridge. 6-28, near Gheen, St. Louis Co, 1y fell from nest 14 feet up in White Pine, NJH; young being fed were reported from Hubbard (ACR, LWJ), Beltrami (JAM, MG), Crow Wing, (MSB), Cass (MG) and St. Louis (PBH, HEP, AKA) Counties.
1964FallNo sharp increase noted in NE or NC Minn as compared to summer populations. JCG reports gradual increase in NE Minn as follows: Sept, 9 observations by 6 people; Oct, 23 observations by 9 people; Nov, 42 observations by 11 people. JLR reports they have disappeared from Roseau Co by end of Nov. but MG reports they are still in Beltrami Co; southern limits thus far: 11-11 Fargo-Moorhead, 1 at feeder for single afternoon, EGA; 11-21 Washington Co, 1, Mrs. W. Lundgren.
1964WinterVery numerous in St. Louis Co, with peaks of 728 on Duluth XC (new state high) and 264 on Hibbing XC. 100 reported in Lake Co (1-11, RK) and flocks of 25-50 reported in Cook Co (Illi, MAF, MOP, LS). 1968WinterQuite scarce in all of the northern part of the state; virtually none in the city of Duluth in late winter (after Jan.) but a few groups in outlying rural areas all winter, definitely a non-invasion year in northeastern Minnesota; more reports for the southern part of the state but still very erratic and uncommon there, numbers reduced in late winter also. For whole state-over-winter flocks, 20-7 5, reported only from Kanabec, Stearns, Mille Lacs, Beltrami, Hubbard, Morrison, Roseau, Chisago Counties.

1982Winter One south report from Chisago Co. In the north, they were present in virtually all counties north and east of a line from Pine to Becker to Roseau. The reports were mixed but they seemed to be more common than usual in the north central and north west and less common in the north east.

1990Winter Scarce outside north region. Reported from 17 counties (18 I. y.) with a CBC statewide total of 1,102. Not recorded west of Sherburne and Goodhue in central and south regions. A handful of birds trickled out of the coniferous zone into eastern counties where a few observers found them in Hennepin, Anoka, Sherburne, and Goodhue.

Known from only two Northeast region feeders (KRE), and only one feeder in Lake of the Woods (MHK). Noted regularly at the following additional locations: 40 in Hoyt Lakes, St. Louis County ALE, 22 in Pineville, St. Louis County NAJ, and up to 22 in rural Waubun, Becker County BRK.

Similar to the pattern shown by Pine Grosbeaks, this species was observed primarily within range north until mid-February when reports abruptly stopped. High count was 2/16 Lake (70) MJB, with all additional counts less than half that number. Rarely reported south in recent decades, but for the second year in a row, were 12/24 Ramsey †FTM, a calling bird of undetermined gender, and 2/2 Carver †WCM, a female bird briefly visiting the observer's feeder — a welcome trend if it persists!

Wildlife Manager, the latter bird was present at feeders since November.
