1930SummerAn unusually early nest of this species was found near Shakopee by Ralph Woolsey and Leander Fischer on May 20th, at which time it held two eggs. The second nest was foUnd at Silver Lake, near Excelsior, by the writer* in which the fifth egg vas laid, July 21st. These hatched on August 1st, Nunie:rous other nests were found, the latest by the writer on September 6th, at which time it held three young, just hatched, and two eggs. On September 13th this nest held two young, still fe:r from ready to leave the ne11t. -32 -The Elicker, 1930
1931SummerThe first nest reported contained two eggs on July 13th. The last two nests contained four eggs on August 18th (Harius t1orse) and three young about four days old on August 23rd was reported byMr. Swedenborg.
1932SummerAn e::ctreraely early nest of this species in \ whioh the 3 young had already hatched wns found on June 5 by Downey & Efsele. The last nest was seen.August 18, and the 2 young were almost full grown (Horse).. '
1933Summer Six nests of the UWild Co.nary" were reported. Two nests found by Morse at Now Brighton on July 16th held 5 eggs and 5 newlyhatched young respectively. Mrs. Peterson reports the last nest, found on August 2nd at MDL1ison. It contained 6 eggs. RED-EYED TOWHEE A nest of the chewink found by Cumoings at Red Wing on June 23rd contained a single young bird.
1934Summer A nest with 3 eggs, found by Risser at Sturgeon Lako on July 11th, was the first record of an occupied nest this season. On a much earlier date (May 25th) Hanson and Hiemenz saw a American Goldfinch co.rrying nesting material near St. Cloud. Tho latest nest, with eggs held 4 when found by Hiemenz on August 31st at St. Cloud. The same observer discovered a nest containing a young bird ready to leave the nest on September 16th, P. 53 also at St. Cloud. This fledgling was blind, so one of Hiomen1z' friends took it home~ but it died the nest motning.
1935Summer The earliest nest of this notoriously late nester crune to the attention of Breckenridge July 8th \vnen he saw a nest being built. On August 14th he saw 3 eggs. Swodenborg w.ri tes tollin~ that he sav a nest "~
1936Summer Swedenborg found a nest of four eggs on August first. This was only nest for this species reported.
1938SummerThree young thistle birds in their nest were seen by Sweden­borg on July 3I near Minneapolis.
1940SummerA nest of the thistle bird was found with 5 eggs on September 5, near St. Cloud by the T. S. Roberts Club. Others were observed by H. Eng­strom at Lake Sylvia on August 8.
1943Summer47 nests, with average.of 5 egg1s each; 18 nests from which young had g,one. Ramsey County, dur­ing Auguslt. Bros. Lewis and Pius. Dul'uth, feeding you-ng, September 18. H. R. Adams. Mpls., F. S. Davidson. June 14; 1carrying 'llesting material.
1944Summer180. Brother Hubert and Brother Pius found 153 nests, from July 14 to September 14. All but nine were in thistles, St. Paul. Others found by Moore, Hamilton, Field, Hofstead, Olson, and Kutz.
1945Summer167 nests with eggs, first date, July 7, last date, September 2, nest with 1 young, Aug. 31, Ramsey Co., Brother Hubert; 4 nests, August 4 to 19, Hennepin Co., Don and Eldeen Jacobs; 2 nests with eggs, August 30, Hennepin Co., Larry Flahavan, Fred Blanch; nest with young, August 22, Hennepin Co., Wallace E. Hamilton.
1945WinterFour at Duluth, January 28, 1945, (Mrs. Olin); present every winter in varying numbers in the Twin Ci.ty region and throughout the southern part of the state. RED CROSS-BILL. Several records from Duluth and the north shore of Lake Superior; eight in Isanti County, December 29, 1946, (members of Minnesota Bird Club).
1946Summer4 young out, Sept. 3, St. Louis Co., Lakala; 2/7 nests ( 5 eggs, July 6, to 4 young, Sept. 3), largely in Ramsey Co., Bro Hubert. This phenomenal record is the result of a surprising concentration and careful recording of locations.
1947Summer4 young, Sept. :3, Fond du lac, Lakela; Sept. 7, 44 nests; Sept. 14, 19 more nests; Sept. 21, 80 nests in all found during July, August and September, likely 100 nests; 1/3 of nests not successful, Ramsey Co., Bro- THE Common Flicker ther Pius, Meyer, Keenan; July !J, building, Itasca Park, Longley.
1961SummerOn 20 August one nestling was shaken from nest on Minnesota Point, Duluth by A vifaunal Club members. Two more nests in Hennepin County on 3, 4 September, found by R. Huber.
1963SummerReported nesting in Ramsey, Hennepin, St. Louis and Winona Counties.

1964WinterReported on all XC's except Willmar and Hibbing. Late Dec and early Jan, reported N. to Washington (DH, DS), Anoka (MAS. LJ), Stearns (RPR, NH, XC) Co's. Isolated reports in Duluth (BL, AKA, JCG) and Two Harbors (RK). Peak 12-26 Anoka XC, 500 and 1-2, Dakota Co, 120, ACR. Mid-Jan movements to £'.ig Stone (RAG), Stevens (ES), Kanabec (RHJ), St. Louis (Ely, BL) and Beltrami (JAM) Co's. Early and mid-Feb brought another movement with 100 in Mpls (MEH), "many" in Washington Co (JO), 200 in Crow Wing Co (MSB) and a small increase at Two Harbors, (JCG). Other isolated reports: a few all winter in Nobles Co (EHW) and 1 during XC period at Fargo-Moorhead.

1978Winter Perhaps the biggest winter ever for this species; reported from 33 counties north to Hubbard, Cass, Crow Wing (including 129 on the Crosby CBC) and Aitkin; largest concentrations of 559 on the St. Paul N. E. CBC and 1258 on the Rochester CBC; one of the few passerines common enough to almost overshadow the lack of other species.

1982Winter Perhaps the best season on record for this species. Reports from 50 counties throughout the state. In the north, they were generally described as being abundant with the peak numbers occuring in a field of unpicked sunflowers in northeast Roseau Co. on 2/12, 500+ (PKL). In the south the species was equally widespread but apparently less abundant since no large numbers were reported.
