54:411982-05-09Westwood Nature CenterHennepin(vote 1-6) The only plumage description, given by an observer with no experience with this species, was that the bird had a "scarlet head" and "dark wings." While such a description could fit a male Western Tanager, it was too sketchy and inadequate since there was no mention of wing bars of back color or yellow underparts in the original description. However, as noted in the Geographic and Master fie ld guides (also see American Birds 26:713-714 and 42:3-5) , some Scarlet Tanagers in fall can also show such wing bars. Not Accepted

70:1561998-04-18Reads LandingWabasha(record #9825, vote 3–4). Although a male Western Tanager in alternate plumage is difficult to confuse with anything else, the majority voted not to accept the documentation, which includes mention of a gray tail and gray wings which “had a checkered appearance between the pinion feathers and the shoulders”. Although this bird may have been correctly identified, the described features seem inconsistent with Western Tanager and might possibly match a male Summer Tanager in molt. Not Accepted

73:352000-08-17LakevilleDakota(record #2000-77, vote 0–7). The identification of this apparent tanager seems to be based primarily on the bird's wing bars; however, the Scarlet Tanager can sometimes show visible wing bars, and nothing else in the brief description clearly indicates why this was a Western Tanager. Not Accepted
73:1682000-08-26Lyon(record #2001-03, vote 2–5). The observer was careful to consider and preclude the possibility of this being an aberrant Scarlet Tanager with wing bars, but the rest of the documentation is too unclear and somewhat inconsistent for the majority to accept the record. At one point the bill is described as black, which would preclude a Western Tanager, although later the bill is said to be light. Also, it is unclear what the observer means when using the terms mantle and back, and whether they were gray or olive or olive yellow. This lack of clarity weakens the record, since the back color of female tanagers is a key field mark. Not Accepted
