64:138 | 1990-10-20 | Good Harbor Bay | Cook | (vote 3-4); previously voted on, accepted and published (The Loon 62:228). The observer based the identification on the lack of "white near the rear flank", an upturned bill, and tile eye "visible within tile white boundaries df tile side of the face." However, Pacific Loons also lack flank patches and often hold their bills up at an angle, and, while tile face pattern would seem to fit Red-tllroated rather tllan Pacific Loon, there was no indication of tile distance and light conditions involved or how well the face pattern was actually seen. | Not Accepted

64:138 | 1992-05-30 | Dulutll | St. Louis | (vote 3-4). The description of tllis small loon clearly shows a bill shape perfectly consistent witll Redtllroated Loon; however, tile description and sketch also suggest the bird had a partial "chins trap" and a dark line along tile side of tile neck separating tile gray hindneck from tile white foreneck, which are features of the Pacific Loon. It was therefore felt this bird is best considered an unidentified small loon. | Not Accepted

69:152 | 1996-10-24 | Gooseberry Falls SP | Lake | (record #97-05, vote 2-5). Although there was a Common Loon present for direct size comparison with the loon in question, its identity apparently was only determined by “the bill always being upward a bit”. However, since the actual shape of the bill itself was not noted, Pacific Loon is not precluded since that species frequently holds its bill uptilted as well. | Not Accepted

72:40 | 1999-08-01 | L. Benton | Lincoln | (record #99-51, vote 0-7). The field notes written at the time of the observation — for which the observers are to be commended — unfortunately are not detailed enough to include any diagnostic Red-throated Loon field marks and to eliminate a Common or Pacific loon (or even some of the grebes). | Not Accepted
72:164 | 1999-11-17 | 1999-11-21 | French L. | Rice | (record #99-70, vote 1-6). This loon may well have been correctly identified since it was seen by many observers over a period of days. However, only two descriptions were submitted, and neither was clear or complete enough to preclude other loons. The original observer's description of its smaller size was only based on a subjective impression since no direct comparison with Common Loon is stated; the other documentation, which states direct size comparison with Commons, is difficult to judge since it was written from memory four months after the observation. The bill's actual shape as described fits Red-throated Loon well, but neither observer described the bill as anything more than slightly or occasionally uptilted. Finally, the spots on the bird's back are described as “rounded, oval” by one observer as as “checkered” by the other, and this is more suggestive of a Pacific or Common loon. | Not Accepted

17 | 76:152 | 2004-04-29 | Lebanon Hills Regional Park | Dakota | (recirculated record #2004-040, first vote 4-3, second vote 6-1). This small loon was seen only in flight for a relatively brief period of time by an experienced observer, who noted the bird's tendency to repeatedly move its head up and down, and back and forth. There were lingering concerns that a pale-looking, basic-plumaged Common Loon could not be ruled out under these circumstances. | Accepted
