The observer, who had no experience with this species, only observed the bird for 10–15 seconds, and it was unanimously felt this was not long enough to make a relatively difficult identification of a first state record. Even though the extensive documentation (for which the observer is to be commended) suggests the bird may not have been a Blue-headed Vireo, it still does not preclude the possibility of it being a Cassin's Vireo or perhaps another species. | Not Accepted | ||||
| 73:35 | 2000-05-13 | Cottonwood | Lyon | (record #2000-38, vote 0–10). All ten MORC members vote on potential first state records. Despite the ity felt the identification by the experienced observer may well have been correct. However, the record is weakened by the top of the head and nape being described as “almost black” and darker than the back, which is inconsistent with this species (and with Blue-headed and Cassin's vireos). It is also unclear from the description as to the exact extent of yellowish color on the flanks and under tail coverts. As stated and shown by an article on these vireos in Birding (28:458– 471), some Cassin's Vireos and one subspecies of Blue-headed Vireo can closely resemble Plumbeous Vireos, making any reported sight records of Plumbeous or Cassin's vireos here difficult to adequately document. | Not Accepted | ||||

Both observers appear to have done their very best to document this record and notify other birders in an attempt to get better photos and other critical information. The bottom line is that the photos, standing alone, are not sufficient to meet the high bar for a first state record. There is no audio recording to supplement the photos. Prior MOURC discussions regarding the identification of this species have concluded that it is extremely difficult to make a judgment in the absence of an audio recording. | Not Accepted | ||||
