5/6 Winona BF, et al. (The Loon 61:8384). Winter 1989
62:1341989-11-19Black Dog LakeDakota(vote 0-7) . This identification may also have been correct, but it was based only on the gull being "noticeably darker on its back" and "approximately the same size as nearby Herring Gulls." However, such a brief description does not preclude the possibilities of Thayer's or California or female Great Black-backed Gulls, all of which have darker mantles than Herring Gulls and which are about the same size. 62:1341989-12-01MinneapolisHennepin(vote 0-7). Although the concensus was that the careful and experienced observer may well have seen this species, the circumstances at the time of the observation made the record difficult to accept. The identification was based on a darker mantle color and the "slightly smaller" size when compared to adjacent Herring Gulls. However, the gull was observed just after sunset and at a distance of 1/4 mile, so that mantle color would have been difficult, if not impossible, to accurately determine. Also the size description is suspect since the head of the sleeping gull was never seen, nor was it ever seen standing up, so that it is unknown if the bird's head, bill and overall height were actually smaller. 65:331992-06-101992-06-11Howard LakeWright(vote 3-4). While it was originally agreed that this immature gull was possibly a Lesser Blackbacked, it was decided to send the documentation to three out-of-state authorities since none of us in Minnesota has much experience with immatures of this species. On the basis of their review, the majority felt this was best left as unidentified, since the three authorities did not agree on the age of the gull: the mantle color, bill pattern, tail pattern and leg color did not clearly indicate if this was a oneor two-year-old bird. Two of the reviewers, therefore, had reservations about the record; one felt "8090% confident of the identification," citing the incomplete description of the back color and wing pattern, and the other was "uneasy about endorsing this record" because of uncertainties about the back color, tail pattern and leg color. 68:581995-01-01St. PaulRamsey This “black-backed” gull was most likely a Lesser Black-backed, but the leg color was not seen, the overall size (“about the size of a Herring Gull”) would also fit a female Great Black-backed, and the observer's impression of mantle color is difficult to judge since the light conditions and distance involved are not clearly described. Also discussed at the 3 December meeting were the following items: It was agreed that only six of the Western Tanager records from the May 1995 influx (The Loon 67:180-181) could be only ones documented. It was agreed, however, that the other 13 undocumented males reported were still probably correct identifications, and written descriptions or photographs of these individuals would cords are: Not Accepted

74:362001-10-04near Camden State ParkLyon(record #2001-57, vote 2-5). The leg color of this gull was never seen, which is a key field mark of this species. The mantle is only described as dark gray, but this would also fit California Gull. Also, the overall size is described as about the same as nearby Ring-billed Gulls, which is not consistent with Lesser Black-backed. The mention of “bright white secondaries” in the documentation is equally inconsistent and puzzling. Not Accepted
