Black-necked Stilt

Black-necked Stilt (R) (Himantopus mexicanus)Start Date 1987-01-01
RefFirstLastLocationCounty23CommentStatus
53:1291981-04-18Leech LakeCass(vote 3-4) Although there was a strong minority opinion that the "solid black wings with ... white body under-neath" and the "long, dangling red legs" could fit no other species, the majority had several reservations. The bird was apparently seen only in flight no closer than 200 yards away, was visible for only one min-ute, and was identified by inexperi-enced observers. For such an ex-tremely unusual species (would have been a first state record), it was felt that there should be a better look and a more complete plumage de-scription. Not Accepted

This record was documented by a written description of one bird and several photographs, but only one bird was depicted in each image and it was unclear how many different individuals were actually photographed. This highlights one of several problems that may occur when records are documented by physical evidence but not supported by adequate written documentation. Accepted

78:402005-05-30Spindler's Pond near Rice Lake State ParkSteele(recirculated record #2005-042, first vote 5-2, second vote 3-4). Field notes were not taken and the bird was seen without binoculars from an estimated distance of 150 yards by the observer submitting documentation. This record was discussed at the December 2005 meeting and it was noted that some of the described details were likely visible only to the observer using binoculars; second-hand reports of plumage details — especially color, but also feather shape and anatomical placement — are potentially less reliable than first-hand accounts.
