Mrs. John Mathisen; Nov. 3, Cass Co., Avifaunal Club. as if echoing the early arriving shorebirds in the first week of July, the warblers and vireos began moving during the third week of July, but in a very leisurely fashion. More noticeable movements occurred in the Arrowhead Country on Aug. 17 (D. Pearson) and the first large wave to hit the Twin Cities was on Aug. 19 (D. Pearson). Mrs. E. A. Schmid noted a wave on Sept. 21 near Squaw Lake, Cass County and Erma Christopher noted a wave in Wright County on the following day, Sept. 22.

Western marginal localities: Beltrami (MG, JAM), Crow Wing (MSB), Sherburne (EAH), Hennepin (MEH, MHM, MAS), Ramsey (EMB), Dakota (BL, ACR), Wabasha (DGM), and Winona (XC period) Co's.

CBC total of 101 individuals, the highest count in over ten years, and perhaps a record. This count may include some individuals already reported by seasonal contributors (but attempts were made to minimize duplication). Peak 24 on the Duluth CBC.

1999Fall Appeared suddenly and widely distributed throughout the state beginning in mid-October. Numbers were up along the North Shore. Early north 10/12 Aitkin CB and Otter Tail DST, 10/13 St. Louis SS. Early south 10/12 Hennepin SC, 10/13 Dakota DBS. DF had 46 observations of this species from 41 different locations, 23 of these within Meeker County; his high count of 11 occurred on 11/21.
1999Winter Reported from 58 counties throughout the state. Many observers reported increased numbers, and the CBC total was a record 167. Peak 2/12 Aitkin (11) WN.

The presence of Loggerhead Shrikes prior to these two dates (see above) underscores the need to carefully separate these two species in March/early April. North sightings in nine counties, representing all six regions. Late north 4/6 Aitkin WEN, 4/8 Carlton LAW, 4/26 Polk EEF (also overlapping with Loggerhead reports).
