Common in Cook County in the Spring season
This photo was taken just outside the Grand Marais harbor, March 20, 2009. I was on the breakers behind the U.S. Coast Guard building and the Long-tailed Ducks were many hundred yards out in Lake Superior. I took the photo with a Canon 50D and a 400mm f/5.6 lens. Watching them was a treat; when one dove, the whole group followed. I timed their diving and they would stay under 1 minute and 14 seconds. At times they would fly out into the lake, turn and then land in the same spot. They never came in closer. There were 13 ducks in the flock.
